Olympus Stylus Tough 6020 review

A small digital camera from Olympus: Tough 6020

Olympus Stylus Tough 6020 is considered to be an improvement from its predecessor, the Stylus Tough 8010. The new model is cheaper and more solid. Does it rise up to expectations? We made a test with this digital camera and here is the entire review.

HyperCrystal display and 14MP

First off, let’s some of the product’s specifications and features. The Stylus Tough 6020 comes with the following: 3.8” x 1” x 2.5”, 178 g, 2.7-inch, 230,000 dot HyperCrystal III LCD, 5x wide optical zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent of 28-140mm, 14-Megapixel, 1/2.3-inch CCD imaging sensor, f3.5(W)-f5.1(T), 720p HD (1280×720) , VGA (640×480) or QVGA (320×240) video at 30fps with sound, 1/2000-1/4 sec. shutter speed, 1GB internal memory, SD/SDHC card slot, TruePic III image processor, ISO 64-1600, Li-Ion rechargeable battery, built-in flash, One-Touch video recording, Dual image stabilization, Automatic Noise Reduction after 1/2 second shutter, AF Tracking, Tap Control, Intelligent Auto, Creative Filters: Pop Art, Pin Hole, Fish Eye, Drawing, Advanced Face Detection, Shadow Adjustment, USB Cable & Charger (F-2AC), Audio/Video Cable, Warranty Card, Quick Start Guide, Wrist Strap, Instruction Manual and ib Software on Internal Memory.

Slim dimensions

Olympus-stylus-Tough-6020The camera is slim and easy and it features various exposed screws and a lot of metal hardware. The flash, cover and AF assist light sit on the front; the panel covering the ports and battery can be found on the left side. On the back of the camera are the screen and controls; on the right from the screen are the grille covering the speaker, the play, record, menu and help keys and the 4-way controls. The LCD screen is large and anti-glare, but unfortunately images are not as clear or as sharp as the ones on other gadgets in the time of the review. The on/off options, microphone, shutter and power buttons sit on the top of the Olympus Tough 6020. The bottom comes with the tripod socket.

Underwater

This is one solid camera, although it’s made of plastic; you won’t have to be afraid that the doors protecting the memory card and battery compartments will snap off. It is also a very comfortable device and some of its major advantages are the following: it’s submersible to a depth of 4.8 meters, survives drops of 1.5 meters and resists up to -10°C.

The flash is not great

The menu is easy to use and offers quick access to the camera’s functions. A drawback was the flash; we tested it at a party and results weren’t great; besides, zooming in and out was imprecise and jerky; the same happened with the internal zoom. Other problems were the startup time and the camera’s performance in low lighting; when we wanted to take a picture, we had to wait over 7 seconds for the Olympus Stylus 6020 to start and the results were undecipherable images. On the plus side, when conditions are good, the camera produces images with good colors and sharpness. Close-ups worked really well with the two macro modes. Other modes integrated in the device: drive/burst, playback, movie and scenes. We tested them for our review and encountered no problems, although videos lacked sharpness.

The test and review conclusions

All in the all, the new Olympus Stylus Tough 6020 is a decent device, with a tough exterior (hence its name), high resolution shooting and 720p video option; but, if you want a more sophisticated camera with great performance, you have to look elsewhere.
