Logitech Rechargeable Speaker S715i

A portable sound system

Logitech is a company that pays great attention to what’s happening in today’s technology-driven world, especially to manufacturing a speakers system that’s very portable, very slender, compatible with the iPhone and the iPod and capable of offering only the best in audio quality. And they achieved that with their Rechargeable Speaker S715i ‎ that doesn’t cost a lot of money: just $149.99. A gadget like this is bound to have some drawbacks and we’ll mention them as well in our next review.

6 speaker drivers

Logitech’s previous S125i and S315i both had a design reminiscent of an industrial theme and the S715i ‎ doesn’t stray away from this kind of look. Its black-painted body has the shape of a bone, is slim, curvy and your attention is immediately drawn to its 6 speaker drivers. But, due to this design, gadgets that are on the thick side won’t connect very well. When we turned the unit with the rear to the front we saw it had a padding made from rubber whose purpose was to offer stability when the device was planted on a desk; the back also housed the following: another 2 speakers along with a set of auxiliary ports for audio and power sealed with some rubber material. To maintain protection against the likes of dust and other damaging factors, the Logitech Rechargeable Speaker S715i comes with a cloth sleeve. Logitech-Rechargeable-Speaker-S715i

iPod compatible

An adaptor for power and a remote control are some of the items shipping alongside the gadget. The remote control was, as we noticed during the tests, on the very small side and we kept losing it. It also didn’t feature full menu navigation for an iPod and the buttons were only 5 in total, so in order to select an artist or browse between menus we had to go to the device and do it ourselves. The charger didn’t fit at all inside the system’s dock and that’s why we had to carry it from room to room.

The top of the S715i is embedded with a LED light that emits glows in different colors – orange, green and red – to show the battery’s remaining time. The tests we did for this review pointed to a maximum of 7 hours and 50 minutes of life before the battery got all drained up.

Some distortions

The majority of speaker docs made for people on the go don’t have such a good performance, especially the ones that are small. Logitech thought of ways to solve this and the Rechargeable Speaker S715i is a definite success, because it is actually larger and narrower than what’s being made these days. This results in a great deal of portability instead of a really slim and small sized gadget that you wouldn’t be able to take with you in trips. In spite of its design, the system has some excellent drivers that, put through listening levels that are moderate, produce superb audio quality. The speakers delivered rock and orchestral tunes in all their frequency range. But, when we turned the volume up, we heard inconsistencies. The deeper the bass, the more distortions there were; at some intervals we even heard amplifier hisses, but no notable midrange details. When we connected the gadget to the wall charger, the sound was so very loud at a close distance.

Review conclusion

Among portable sound systems created last year, the one courtesy of Logitech – the Rechargeable Speaker S715i – is the one we liked the most once we got past the distortions, the too small remote control, charger and lack of full menu navigation for our iPod.
