Noise-reduction Technology Built Into Apple’s A5 Processor

Improvements on the iPhone 4S

A couple of days ago, iPhone 4S users were informed that its A5 CPU is equipped with a technology reducing noise. A licensed one at that. Many saw this info as the reason behind the impossibility to do a port-back of Siri to older iPhone models.

This noise-reduction technology offered to owners of the iPhone 4S is possible thanks to a company called Audience. This is a start-up company which concluded a partnership with Apple this January. The exact details surrounding this were made public in the paperwork issued for the customary initial public offering of stock.

Chipworks and iFixit combined their forces and the result was a dedicated Audience silicon. This would be used on the iPhone 4. But the iPhone 4S came and turned things around with its earSmart technology – also courtesy of Audience – that would be integrated in the smartphone’s A5 CPU. This of course answers the question of the big size of the chip inside the 4S. Linley Gwennap, analyst at Linley Group, said that this noise-reducing feature takes away the package needed for the chip made by Audience and reduces overall system cost.apple-iphone-4s

earSmart technology

earSmart is a digital signal processor that has a clear purpose in mind. And that is to remove background noise along with noisy voices so that users can enjoy speaking to someone on their iPhone 4S without being bothered by environments full of noise. The implementation of this earSmart in the A5 processor will make you hear what the other is saying even if you hold your smartphone at a distance from your arm. Also, if you don’t have this noise-reducing technology, Siri won’t be able to hear your commands.

The noise-reduction technology that is included in the CPU of the iPhone 4S is a major step forward for Apple.
