Motorola Droid X 2 review
Better that Droid X ?
Motorola Droid X 2 is the latest smartphone to come on the market. Is it a worthy upgrade from the previous Droid X model ? Here is what we think, if you read our test and review.
Specifications are as follows: 5 x 2.6 x 0.4 inches, 169 g, 4.3-inch screen size, 854×480 TFT LCD touch screen, CDMA, 850/1900 bands, 1Xrtt EVDO Rev 0 A and 1 GHz TI OMAP 3630 processor. The 8-megapixel camera has HD video capture, HDMI output, DLNA support, 3G, GPS, Android 2.1, Bluetooth, 1570 mAh battery, 8GB built-in memory, 16GB microSD card, speakerphone, Skype Mobile, threaded chat view, integrated Wi-Fi, conference calling and reference material.
Taller than the HTC Evo 4G
The new Motorola Droid X 2 is taller than the HTC Evo 4G and the comparison doesn’t end here: this smartphone is lighter, thinner than and definitely not as bulky as its predecessor. However, the bump on the back of this product may be annoying to some users, but the finish here is nice and soft.
This phone is said to be the largest one in the US and some may find it awkward when holding it to the ear and making calls. The screen is bigger and more beautiful than the one on other smartphones: it has a resolution of 854 by 480 pixels with 16:9 aspect ratio. This makes reading text easy. Also, colors are vibrant. The product comes with a proximity sensor and a built-in accelerometer.
Multitouch technology
The keyboard of this phone is multitouch: you get pinch-to-zoom support and the possibility to hit two keys simultaneously. The latter is made possible with the help of a method called Swype text-entry. Also, the Droid X 2 offers users not only one, but two keyboards: a standard virtual one and Swipe. The Swipe one is very quick and accurate, as our tests showed.
The screen has four buttons beneath it; these are menu, home, back and search, but they are not touch-sensitive. The right side features a camera activation/capture key and a volume button, respectively. The power/lock key and the 3.5mm headphone jack are on the top, whereas the HDMI and microUSB ports sit on the left of the gadget. The HDMI port doesn’t come with a microHDMI cable with which to connect it to HDTVs; also, there’s no kickstand.
Android 2.1 OS
As mentioned above, the newest Droid X 2 works with Android 2.1 that has an improved version of the Motoblur software. This means that widgets such as weather, photo gallery and contacts won’t occupy a huge portion of the screen as in other smartphones. The possibility to save widgets is also present. Furthermore, users will be able to add Android widgets, shortcuts and folders to the seven home screens. There’s a very useful toolbar which shows you the panel you’re on; it also enables you to jump to a page by pressing the key that corresponds to it. The toolbar also transforms into a bar that launches the full menu and other options you might want to access.
Online services access
The phone’s processor is one of the smartest on the market: it opens apps with little delay. The GPS works very well. The Motorola Droid X 2’s interface lets you sign into all kinds of accounts (such as Google and Yahoo!), e-mail services (like Microsoft Exchange and Facebook, among others) and also various services that offer photo sharing options. Google and Exchange calendars are integrated; the address books links to the user’s Facebook, MySpace and Twitter contacts.
Multiple file compatibility
Also, users will find it easy to play MP3, WMA, AAC and WAV music; the quality of the songs you listen to is top notch. The smartphone features an FM radio with 15 presets. We were also able to download movies with the Blockbuster on Demand application.
Photos we snapped with the camera looked great, as did recorded videos (captured in 720 HD at 24 frames per second). The three-mic system of this smartphone is ideal for capturing audio. Pictures and video can be shared via e-mail, Bluetooth, Facebook and others. Call quality is great.
The connection to the Internet works fast, so no complaints there.
Review conclusions
After our test we can conclude for this review that the Motorola Droid X 2 represents a good addition to Verizon’s Android smartphones. Users will be thrilled by its connectivity and numerous multimedia features.
