Samsung Repp
Design
The Samsung Repp’s design is relatively appealing with its berry shaded front and back covers, its sizeable, flat spines and matte silver colored top and bottom.
The smartphone itself is pretty small, only 4.35 inches tall by 2.26 inches wide by 0.48 inch thick and weighing at 3.72 ounces. Although it’s acceptable in terms of brightness and color, the Samsung R680 Repp’s 3.2 inch HVGA display also seems a bit small, with its 320×480 pixel QVGA resolution and it has a tendency to wash out in direct sunlight in the test performed for this review.
Powered by Android 2.3
One of the more noticeable elements of the Samsung Repp is that it runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread without any extra skins, fact which may displease some users and may seem appealing to other, more dedicated Android users.
Positioned under the display, you’ll notice three navigation buttons, namely the touch sensitive back and menu buttons as well as the button that serves for Select and Home. On the phone’s right side you’ll find the microSD card slot and the power button. On the top, you’ll find a 3.5mm headset jack and on the left, a volume rocker. On the phone’s bottom you’ll find the Micro-USB charging port and lastly, on the back, the 3.2 megapixel camera.
Features
In terms of features, the Samsung Repp SCH-R680 is fairly standard. Since its equipped with Android Gingerbread, there are some features you’ve naturally come to expect. Among those features we can count GPS, Wi-Fi, text and multimedia messaging, Bluetooth and a number of social networking and email options, plus Google’s addition to every Android equipped smartphone, Google Maps, Places, search, books and YouTube. Of course, the phone also comes equipped with a calendar, clock, calculator, music player and browser, and you gain access to over 300.000 downloadable apps via the Android Market.
Additionally, there are a few more preinstalled apps that come with the phone like Daily Perks and CityID, Think Free Office and a ringtone app.
The 3.2 megapixel camera is alright but it lacks flash and autofocus, so you’ll need to take pictures in well lit places. The colors aren’t as clear or vibrant and you might notice some loss of detail when you zoom in.
Video capture is also workable, but don’t expect too much since it has its limitations with recorded voices having a noticeable ‘buzzy’ quality, and the video quality wasn’t exactly top notch. The Samsung Repp supports up to 32GB of expandable memory and offers a preloaded 2GB microSD card.
Pros
The Samsung Repp offers all the features you’ve come to expect from an Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone.
Cons
Before considering this smartphone as an option, you should carefully look over its entry-level specs. Tests have shown us that the phone’s overall speed, camera and call quality are acceptable, but it’s clear that this model is a medium quality smartphone. The display’s size is too small.
Review conclusion
As we mentioned before in this review, the Samsung Repp delivers an overall acceptable suite of features, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to check other models out first before you make a choice.
