Samsung UN55D8000
A new 55 inch LED 3D HDTV
Samsung is a very popular company which manufactures many great quality products which are adored by people everywhere. They have launched a new TV in February, namely the Samsung UN55D8000. According to the Korean team, this product adds a stylish design to an incredible picture quality and advanced connectivity possibilities. We decided to test the product for ourselves and see whether or not it rose up to expectations. Here is our conclusion.
1080p resolution
Samsung excels when it comes to design and their new UN55D8000 delivers in this aspect thanks to its One Design brushed metal 0.2” bezel. The device sits on an improved Quad Stand that features minimalist visual appeal; this makes the TV fit in any environment. With measurements and weight such as 1.2” x 48.5” x 27.8” and 16.19kg, this TV is incredibly slim and light and will fit very well in any of your rooms.
The UN55D8000 sports a 55” LED-lit display with a resolution of 1080p, an image aspect ratio of 16:9, 25.000.000:1 colors and 240 refresh rate. The Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology analyzed all the action in every frame and then adjusted it to make sure the TV had no blurs; therefore we could, while we tested the TV, watch movies that featured both fluidity and sharpness. The resolution of 1080p delivered good clarity and detail.
Micro Dimming Plus technology
Unfortunately, we noticed that details in shadow were obscured and the screen reflected a lot of ambient light. The display also came with a technology called Micro Dimming Plus; this is meant to improve picture uniformity, but it didn’t do that quite so well. The Ultra Clear Panel feature enhanced contrast ratio and made sure that there were no reflections.
The new Samsung UN55D8000 also comes with a remote control on the bottom of which sits a full QWERTY keypad and a screen. This remote worked via Bluetooth. What we didn’t like about it was the fact that it didn’t feature backlighting; using it in the dark was hard. The menus on this TV were very easy to use and responsive.
No glasses provided
The UN55D8000 doesn’t include free 3D glasses, but it does boast widget interfaces along with 2 separate applications and a web browser; it worked well only when we surfed simple Internet pages. Moreover, the UN55D8000 HDTV ships with great picture adjustments for 2D and 3D sources.
The stand of the product we tested came with a lot of stability that made sure it didn’t fall and break.
Performance in the audio field was rich: the pair of stereo speakers made sure that the TV provided excellent sound quality. Voices were intelligible, volume was remarkable and sound was filled with crispness.
4 HDMI connectors
The latest Samsung UN55D8000 features the following: 3 USB ports, 4 HDMI inputs, one PC input of the VGA kind, one component video input, 1 Composite Video input and 1 Ethernet (LAN) port; all of them offered a multitude of possibilities and you can make use of Wi-Fi if you want to.
When talking about general performance, the device didn’t do that well. The major problem was its uniformity. The Movie mode offered too-bright gamma, less shadow detail and too much blue. Fortunately, calibration eliminated all of that. Video processing was great.
Test and review conclusions
All in all, our tests showed that Samsung’s latest UN55D8000 is a good pick if you want a new TV. However, if you’re worried about uniformity aspects and spending too much money on a device, direct your attention to other gadgets.
